What is the BMI forkg andcm?

This calculator is informational and not medical advice. The formula applies to adults (18+) only. Consult a doctor for a health assessment.

How BMI is calculated

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m)

The body mass index (BMI, the Quetelet index) is the ratio of weight in kilograms to the square of height in meters. The World Health Organization (WHO) uses it as the standard screening indicator of nutritional status in adults.

Example: a person weighing 70 kg at 175 cm. The height in meters is 1.75, so BMI = 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 70 ÷ 3.0625 ≈ 22.9 — normal weight. The healthy range for 175 cm is roughly 56.7 to 76.3 kg.

WHO categories for adults

Per the World Health Organization classification: underweight is a BMI below 18.5; normal weight 18.5–24.9; overweight 25.0–29.9; obesity class I 30.0–34.9; obesity class II 35.0–39.9; obesity class III 40.0 and above.

The cut-offs are the same for men and women and do not change with age — but they apply strictly to adults.

Limitations of BMI

BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. It cannot tell muscle from fat — muscular athletes may have an "overweight" BMI with very low body fat. It also ignores age, sex, build and fat distribution.

The formula applies to adults (18+) only; children and adolescents are assessed with percentile growth charts. For a real assessment of your health and body composition, see a doctor.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal BMI?

Per the WHO classification, normal weight for adults is a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. Below 18.5 is underweight, and 25.0 or more is overweight.

Does this calculator work for children?

No. The formula and the WHO cut-offs apply to adults (18+) only. For children and adolescents, BMI is read from percentile growth charts by age and sex — see a pediatrician for that.

What is a healthy weight for 170 cm?

For a height of 170 cm the healthy (WHO "normal") range is roughly 53.5 to 72.0 kg — corresponding to a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9.

Why do athletes have a high BMI?

BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat. Muscle tissue is denser and heavier, so very muscular people can have a BMI above 25 with quite low body fat. Body composition measurements are more reliable for them.
